Upupa epops HOOPOE

The hoopoe or Upupa epops describes a species of bird that includes several subspecies and belongs to the order of the hop and hornbills. It is native to large parts of Central and Western Europe and the Baltic States, with only a few hundred breeding pairs living in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The hoopoe is most widespread in Hungary and in the countries of the Mediterranean region. The hoopoe is also widespread in North Africa, Arabia, the Middle East and Russia. He inhabits open landscapes, in which a largely warm and above all dry climate prevails. Since he looks for prey on the ground, he prefers meadows and pastures with only sparse vegetation and cultivated landscapes such as vineyards or orchards. During the breeding season it can be found in floodplains and sparse forests, where it populates caves for the rearing of the young. The hoopoe reaches a total body length of an average of 28 centimeters and has orange-brown plumage on the head, neck, back and belly. The wings, the tail and the tip of the characteristic hood have a striking black and white banding. The hoopoe can erect its hood and fan it out wide. The thin beak is noticeably long and slightly curved downwards. The hoopoe feeds mainly on crickets, beetles, spiders, various caterpillars and white grubs. Occasionally it also preyed on lizards, frogs, eggs and young of other bird species or millipedes. Males and females form monogamous seasonal marriages and build their nests in caves that they find in crevices, trees, branches or under roofs and in house facades. After a breeding period of a maximum of 19 days, five to eight young birds usually hatch and fledge after about four weeks. After leaving the nest, the young birds remain near their parents and siblings for a few weeks. The hoopoe reaches an age of no more than ten years. However, many hoopoes fall prey to martens or birds of prey.

A beautiful poem by Wilhelm Busch:

The boy and the hoopoe

A bird sang in the green forest, the boy listened in ambush and said: I have to get you! The bird sang: You drip, you drip! I am the hoopoe bird and can fly very quickly.

The bird flew from branch to branch, The boy ran after him with haste to an old oak.

Then the bird flew into a hole; The boy said: I'll catch you, I'll reach you in a moment.

And when he came to the same hole where the bird crawled in, the boy was happy. Then said the bird: Stop it, you drip! I'm the hoopoe bird, you will regret that.

And if you are the hoopoe bird, I'll take your forehead right away, I'm not afraid of you. - He gropes into the bird's nest, He held the bird by the leg, But he did not hold it long.

He shouted: Alas! I stupid drip! You brightly colored hoopoe, you have crawled well. You built your nest out of pure pig manure with a lot of cunning! Oh dear, I smelled that!

O Konrad, you colorful bird! If I left you in peace, that would seem best to me; Because one never likes to take hold of the brightly colored hoopoe bird in its neat nest.
